Problem Statement

Students need ways to feel safe at school because feeling safe leads to feelings of happiness and belonging, leading to higher success in school and life.

Research

To find information for my capstone project, I interviewed STEM students from my school to better collect information. I interviewed about 36 students from grades 9-12. I asked them questions such as, "What is your home life like", "Do you feel like you could defend yourself with a situation with an intruder", and more. I also found more information from a study conducted by the University of Ottawa.

User-Journey Map

To the left of this is my User Journey Map I designed. I asked various questions to my participants to collect data. I found a lot of interesting information like 71% of participants felt like they can't defend themselves.

My Ecosystem Map!

To the left of this is my Ecosystem Map! I had to find the core issues within my problems and find what they are and why they are a problem. I also included some solutions for my problem that don't work that I could build upon. Like some schools own bulletproof items to help protect their students, but most schools can't afford bulletproof items.

Root Cause Analysis!

To the right of this is my Root Cause Analysis map. I had to dive deep into what the users of my problem were feeling, and see what are the factors. I found that students don't feel like their school can't protect them due to poor protection and security, this combined from what I noticed from my user journey map about students feeling like they can't defend themselves, really establish this concern that students can't defend themselves.
